FAQ
Frequently asked questions
General answers to common questions. Have one that isn't here? Ask it on the waitlist form.
Can I book a lesson now?
Not yet. Kilo Papa Aviation is now forming, and booking opens once Kendrick's instructor certification is complete. You can join the waitlist to hear when booking opens.
Is Kendrick a certified flight instructor?
Not yet. Kendrick's instructor certification is not complete, and no flight instruction is offered until it is.
Where will training take place?
In the Fort Lauderdale area of South Florida, Private pilot training is planned in a Cessna 152. Instrument training and beyond is planned in a Cessna 172 with advanced avionics. The specific airport and tail numbers will be shared before booking opens.
How much will training cost?
Pricing hasn't been published yet and will be shared once booking opens. The total cost of learning to fly is driven by a handful of things:
- Airplane rental time
- Instructor time, in the air and on the ground
- Ground school or study materials
- The FAA knowledge test fee
- The examiner's fee for the practical test (checkride)
- An FAA medical exam
- A headset
- How often you fly. Flying regularly usually means less time spent re-learning.
A two-seat Cessna 150 or 152 typically costs less per hour to rent and burns less fuel than a four-seat Cessna 172, which can help on the airplane part of primary training. Why a Cessna 150 or 152.
How long does it take to earn a pilot certificate?
It varies a lot from person to person. Schedule, how often you fly, weather, and individual progress all play a part, so it's hard to give one number. Training plans will be discussed with each student individually.
Do I need any experience for a discovery flight?
No. A discovery flight is meant as an introduction for people who are curious about flying.
Do I need a medical certificate?
Not for a discovery flight with an instructor. Student pilots generally need an FAA medical certificate before they can fly solo, and BasicMed does not cover student solo flight. Getting your medical early avoids surprises later. If you have any health questions, talk with an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) before you start. See the FAA's medical certification page.
What's the difference between a flight review and an IPC?
A flight review is a periodic review of a pilot's general flying knowledge and skills with an instructor. An instrument proficiency check (IPC) is specific to instrument flying and is typically used by instrument-rated pilots to regain or confirm instrument proficiency. The FAA regulations define exactly when each applies, so check them for your own situation.
Does joining the waitlist commit me to anything?
No. Joining the waitlist only means you'd like to hear when booking opens. You can ask to be removed at any time.
What does "Kilo Papa" mean?
K and P are Kendrick Petioma's initials. In the phonetic alphabet pilots use on the radio, K is "Kilo" and P is "Papa."
