Instrument proficiency check (IPC)

For instrument-rated pilots who need to regain instrument currency or want a structured check of their IFR skills.

Who it's for

Instrument-rated pilots whose instrument currency has lapsed long enough that an IPC is required, and instrument pilots who want a thorough check of their skills.

Instructor rating. An IPC must be given by an instructor who holds an instrument instructor rating (CFII). Kilo Papa Aviation will offer IPCs only once Kendrick holds the right instructor certification.

When an IPC is required

Under 14 CFR 61.57, to act as pilot in command under IFR you must have logged certain instrument tasks within the preceding 6 calendar months: instrument approaches, holding procedures and tasks, and intercepting and tracking courses. If you fall behind, there is a further 6 calendar months to catch up on those tasks. After that, the only way to regain instrument currency is an IPC. Check 14 CFR 61.57 for the exact requirements.

What it generally covers

  • A ground review of IFR procedures, regulations, and planning
  • Flight tasks selected from those the Instrument Rating Airman Certification Standards list for an IPC, such as holding, approaches, missed approaches, and flying with some instruments failed
  • A debrief with areas to practice

General FAA steps

  1. An IPC must be given by an appropriately rated instructor (CFII), an examiner, or another person the FAA authorizes.
  2. It is flown in a suitable aircraft, or partly in an FAA-approved flight simulator or training device where the rules allow.
  3. When completed satisfactorily, the instructor endorses your logbook. If more practice is needed first, you can train and complete the IPC later.
About the training airplane. IPCs are planned in a Cessna 172 with advanced avionics. An IPC needs an airplane that is properly equipped and maintained for IFR flight. The exact airplane will be shared when booking opens. You may also be able to use your own suitably equipped airplane.

What to bring or ask

  • Your pilot certificate, medical, photo ID, and logbook showing your recent instrument experience
  • A headset, and ask whether a view-limiting device is provided
  • Current charts or an up-to-date EFB app
  • Ask which airplane will be used and how it is equipped

General information only. FAA requirements are set out in 14 CFR Part 61 and the Airman Certification Standards, and they can change. Specific requirements will be confirmed with you directly before any training begins.
